Launched in December 2023, the NodeMonkes collection quickly defied all expectations. It has become a cultural phenomenon on the Bitcoin scene. Today, we introduce you to this now iconic collection.
The rise of Nodemonkes
NodeMonkes are not traditional NFTs. They are digital artifacts inscribed on the Bitcoin blockchain via the Ordinals protocol, an approach that is both admired and debated within the Bitcoin community. What’s special about them? These artifacts are not simply images, but data immutably inscribed on the Bitcoin blockchain – an essential factor for Ordinals collectors.
An early collection
With 10,000 coins listed between numbers 83522 and 111319, NodeMonkes enjoys the special aura associated with ” low listings “. Above all, the collection claims to be the first 10,000 PFP (profile picture) collection on Ordinals.
The designers’ trick was to wait until December 2023, when the Ordinals ecosystem was sufficiently mature, to launch their collection. This timing maximized the collection’s impact.
Marketing strategy
The addition of a 424-piece honorary collection dedicated to influential web3 personalities also reinforced their place in this universe. By paying tribute to key figures in the industry, the creators of NodeMonkes were able to attract attention and unite a community around their project, a feat that few collections have managed to achieve on this scale.
NodeMonkes’ sales strategy also played an important role in their success. The team opted for reverse auctions (Dutch auctions). The starting price of 0.21 BTC decreased by 0.005 BTC every six blocks (approximately every hour) until 8,000 Nodemonkes were sold. The final price was 0.03 BTC.
On December 29, the Nodemonkes collection page went live on Magic Eden. After four days, the collection had exceeded 500 BTC in sales volume.
And Gordon Goner, founder of the famous NFT Bored Apes Yacht Club collection , bought a Nodemonke.
A meteoric rise
After a slow but steady rise in value in the months following its launch, the collection surged in March, in parallel with Bitcoin’s rise to its new all-time high. An alien NodeMonke sold for 17 BTC, (over a million dollars), becoming the second biggest sale on Ordinals. This transaction not only solidified NodeMonkes’ place on the market, but also attracted the attention of the web3 ecosystem.
Described as the new Cryptopunks, the Nodemonkes briefly surpassed the capitalization of the Bored Ape Yacht Club.
Art and culture are at the heart of success. The NodeMonkes have captured the web3 spirit with their artistic style. What might at first appear to be a haphazard heap of color blocks turns out to be a coherent visual language, blending internal references to crypto culture with unbridled originality. It’s this skilful blend that has enabled the NodeMonkes to become a web3 icon, comparable to other cultural phenomena such as the Nouns’ glasses or the famous Bored Apes.
Despite a few obstacles along the way, including a hacked Discord, the community has remained united around the collection. Not least thanks to a strong meme culture underpinned by a slogan: ” Send nodes “.
NodeMonkes: a phenomenon, a potential
Today, the Nodemonkes floor fell sharply from a low of 0.8 BTC to a high of 0.1 BTC. A drop correlated with the entire Ordinals ecosystem. But the collection remains solid, with over 5,800 holders and a sales volume approaching 5,000 BTC!
For collectors, NodeMonkes represent a unique opportunity to own a piece ofweb3 history. NodeMonkes are likely to become one of the assets correlated with Bitcoin cycles. They have become an integral part of Bitcoin culture and have generated numerous derivative collections.
